As designers, we want to create, solve problems, and make the world a better, and more user-friendly place. In order to fulfill our roles as designers, we take our common requests (such as “can you make this look better?” and “can you make this manufacture-able?”), we combine the interests of the designer, the client, and the consumer to produce beautiful objects that fulfill our purpose of making the world a better place. Good industrial design is about balancing everyone’s opinions and self interests through investigating utility, usability, expression, and expenditure. Designers work with you to help you meet your business objectives, while simultaneously considering the needs of consumers in order to create great things.
should you hire in-house or out?
We could compare and contrast all day, but at the end of most days it comes down to what is best for your business. When you hire in-house design, your company pays salary and benefits for at least a year worth of work weeks. Most of those work weeks will be on the project, with a lunch break, a number of bathroom breaks, and spent among other meetings. If you hire a freelance designer or a design firm, you get billed only for the precise hours and minutes that they are working on your project. Saving your company a lot of money and time!
